Essence of Life

There's a buzz in my ear
I hear it every day, everywhere
It says keep the laws of God
Do it even if you appear odd

Still sometimes I wonder
What am I doing wrong?
I always seem to fall short in some way, some day
Regardless, maybe something I do or say

Like how do I keep the laws all the time?
Will I always be able to focus my mind?
Do I have all the cards within my hands?
Aren't there powers beyond my command?

So when I fall
Was my strength small?
And when I stand
Was it my strength at all?

I'm just a man
Just how much can I do?
How far can I go?
How much can I know?

Is keeping the law
Always black and white?
If so, why is there
Always some controversy to fight?

Don't do this; do it this way
And yet at times the simplest of laws
Are so very deep
With lessons that are hard to keep

Like love your neighbor
And pray for your enemy
Neglected through lies
That blind the eyes

To the truth
That if I always look into the mirror
I can see at least one person
Praying to be delivered

And if that reflection is covered in mercy
It becomes easy to extend such to anybody
Because really who can love except God loves him first?
It is the love I receive from him that I can freely give

It is the foundation of how to live
And despite the struggles and pains
Amidst the heartache and frustration
There are good gains

So keeping the law is constant war
With experiences to keep the awe
But at least with the law - the truth - I have assurance
Assured of peace when it all falls down

Assured that smile or frown
Come what may there will be deliverance in a while
And just about any day now
I'll know the worth of going the extra mile
